Trước hết, chúng ta nên ghi nhận là so với bộ luật cũ, thì quả là có khoảng
trống lớn trong giáo luật hiện hành về vấn đề chuông. Bộ luật cũ đã dành ra ba
điều luật để nói tới chuông nhà thờ (612, 1169, 1185). Cách riêng điều 1169 quy

Nói rằng không còn có luật lệ gì về chuông nhà thờ thì không đúng. Chúng ta sẽ
để cho các sử gia tìm hiểu lý do tại sao bộ luật mới không còn nói đến chuông
nhà thờ nữa. Tuy nhiên, chúng ta thấy rằng trong sách nghi lễ phụng vụ dành cho
các Giám mục (Caerimoniale episcoporum) do bộ Phụng tự xuất bản năm 1984 (nghĩa
là một năm sau bộ giáo luật), có một chương dành cho việc chúc lành chuông nhà
thờ, với nghi thức lấy từ quyển ₡De Benedictionibus‛ được ban hành cùng năm.
Điểm đầu tiên cần được ghi nhận là sách phụng vụ không còn nói tới cung hiến
hoặc chúc lành (consecratio vel benedictio) chuông như trước, mà chỉ nói tới
‛chúc lành‛ mà thôi. Trong bộ luật cũ, việc cung hiến bao gồm việc xức dầu
thánh; còn từ nay thì không còn xức dầu thánh trên chuông nữa, mà chỉ còn rảy
nước thánh. Các nghi thức rửa chuông phỏng theo nghi thức rửa tội cũng bị bỏ
luôn. Điều thứ hai đáng ghi nhận là việc chúc lành chuông không còn dành cho đức
Giám mục như trước (nhất là vì hồi đó còn có chuyện cung hiến), nhưng mà có thể
được cử hành bởi cha sở hay linh mục quản đốc thánh đường. Điều thứ ba cần ghi
nhận là chuông chỉ cần chúc lành khi được sử dụng sau khi đã có nhà thờ. Còn khi
chuông được khánh thánh cùng lúc với nhà thờ mới, thì không cần phải làm lễ chúc
lành riêng cho các chuông, bởi vì việc cung hiến và chúc lành nhà thờ bao gồm
luôn việc chúc lành các vật dụng phụng tự (như là: chuông, đàn, tượng ảnh, vv).
Đó là ba chi tiết quan trọng dưới khía cạnh pháp lý (nghĩa là xét về thẩm quyền
và chất liệu). Còn dưới khía cạnh huấn giáo mục vụ, còn có những chi tiết khác
mà sách phụng vụ muốn nêu bật trong các bài giảng và lời nguyện, tiên vàn là vai
trò của chuông đối với đời sống cộng đoàn. Thường thì chúng ta coi cái chuông
như dấu báo hiệu sắp sửa tới giờ lễ rồi. Chuông ra như có vẻ mời mọc thúc giục
các tín hữu chuẩn bị đi nhà thờ. Thế nhưng, ngoài cái vai trò giục giã như vậy,
ta cũng có thể gán cho nó vai trò quy tụ, triệu tập các tín hữu lại để cùng nhau

Đúng như vậy, chính vì thế mà vừa rồi tôi có nói tới vai trò của tiếng chuông
trong đời sống cộng đoàn. Nó không những chỉ giục giã các tín hữu tới nhà thờ
đọc kinh cầu nguyện, nhưng nó còn thông báo những biến cố quan trọng của cộng
đoàn. Nhiều nơi có thói tục giật chuông để loan báo có một người vừa tạ thế, mà
ta gọi là chuông tử. Có nơi giật chuông khi có tin vui, tựa như khi cử hành đám
cưới, hay là tiếp đón một thượng khách (thí dụ đức Giám mục giáo phận đến thăm).
Và mới đây vài cha sở bên Italia cho giật chuông khi một em bé mới chào đời. Dù

Chuyện thay thế chuông nhà thờ bằng trống chiêng thì không thuộc thẩm quyền của

chiếc, với những cung độ của nó, có thể đánh thành bài hát. Thực ra, thì một số
chức năng của chuông nhà thờ nay đã bị lấn át rồi, trong số đó, phải nói tới
chức năng báo giờ. Lúc đầu, trong các đan viện, người ta giật chuông để báo cho
các tu sĩ giờ giấc khi thức dậy, đọc kinh, làm việc, vv. Sau đó, các giáo xứ
