của thân xác con người sau khi phải chết vì hậu quả của tội như Thánh
Phaolô đã dạy (x Rm 5:12). Nền tảng của niềm tin này là chính sự Phục
Sinh của Chúa Kitô, Đấng đã chiến thắng tội lỗi và sự chết qua sự chết
và sống lại của Người sau 3 ngày ở trong Mồ đá (x 1 Cr 15:12-17)<br>

<font size="3">Khi chết, thân xác con người sẽ bị hủy diệt tiêu tan vì
“cát bụi trở về với cát bụi”. Dầu vậy, thân xác bị tiêu tan này sẽ được
sống lại như Giáo Hội dạy: “Do sự chết, linh hồn lìa khỏi xác, nhưng
trong ngày sống lại, Thiên Chúa sẽ trả lại sự sống bất diệt cho thân xác
được biến đổi khi Ngài lại hiệp nhất nó với linh hồn chúng ta. Cũng như
Chúa Kitô đã sống lại và sống mãi muôn đời, chúng ta tất cả cũng sẽ sống
lại như thế vào ngày sau cùng.” (x. SGLCG, số 1016)<br>

<font size="3">Chính vì niềm tin có sự sống lại của thân xác con người,
mà Giáo Hội cũng dạy các tin hữu phải tôn trọng xác của kẻ chết như sau:
“Thi thể của người quá cố phải được đối xử cách kính trọng và bác ái
trong niềm tin và hy vọng vào sự sống lại. Vì thế, việc chôn cất người
chết là việc thể hiện lòng thương xót nhằm vinh danh con cái Thiên Chúa,
là những đền thờ của Chúa Thánh Thần.” (Sđd, số 2300).<br>

<font size="3">Nghĩa là phải dành cho việc chôn cất thân xác của kẻ chết
một nghi thức xứng đáng nói lên sự kính trọng thân xác sẽ có ngày được
chỗi dậy vinh quang cùng với linh hồn, cho dù tạm thời phải chịu hư nát
trong sự chết. Theo truyền thống khắp nơi từ xưa đến nay ở trong và
ngoài Giáo Hội, thì xác chết phải được chôn cất vào lòng đất nơi nghĩa
trang. Nhưng sở dĩ trước đây Giáo Hội cấm việc hoả thiêu xác người chết
(cremation) là vì có bè rối (heresy) chủ trương đốt xác người chết để
phủ nhận niềm tin có sự sống lại của thân xác con người như Giáo Hội tin
và dạy. Nhưng sau đó bè rối này đã tan rã nên từ sau Công Đồng Vatican
II đến nay, Giáo Hội đã “cho phép hoả táng nếu việc này không có nghĩa
là chối bỏ niềm tin vào sự sống lại của thân xác.” (x. Sđd, số 2301).
Nói rõ hơn, được phép đốt xác để lấy tro cất vào hũ thay vì chôn cất để
xác bị tiêu tan vào lòng đất, nhưng việc hoả thiêu này không được làm
với chủ đích chối bỏ niềm tin vào sự sống lại mai sau của thân xác như
bè rối kia đã chủ trương.<br>

<font size="3">Trong niềm tin của Giáo Hội, thì dù thân xác có bị hư
thối và tiêu tan trong lòng đất, hay bị ác thú ăn thịt, bị hoà tan trong
nước khi chết ngoài biển khơi, hay bị thiêu rụi trong hoả táng, thì
Thiên Chúa vẫn cho sống lại được vì “Người có quyền năng khắc phục muôn
loài và sẽ dùng quyền này để biến đổi thân xác hèn yếu của chúng ta nên
giống thân xác sáng láng” như Chúa Kitô Phục Sinh. Chính vì thân xác đã
được biến đổi của Chúa sau Phục Sinh mà bà Maria Magdala đã không nhận
ra Chúa khi bà đến viếng Mộ sáng sớm ngày thứ nhất trong tuần và khóc
lóc vì nghĩ người ta đã lấy trộm xác Chúa khỏi Mồ đá. (x. Ga 20:11-18).<br>

<font size="3">Sau hết, tuy Giáo Hội ngày nay cho phép việc hoả táng
trong niềm tin xác loài người ngày sau sống lại, dù xác được chôn và bị
tiêu tan trong lòng đất hay ra tro bụi khi hoả thiêu, nhưng chắc chắn
Giáo Hội không khuyến khích hay cho phép việc thả tro này xuống sông hay
biển như những người không chung niềm tin đã làm.<br>

<font size="3">Lý do: xác người chết được chôn ở nghĩa trang hay hoả
thiêu để lấy tro đựng trong hũ sành sứ thì vẫn là biểu tượng cho niềm
tin chờ ngày sống lại của thân xác con người. Do đó mồ mả hay hộp tro
đựng xác hỏa thiêu phải được giữ gìn cách kính trọng trong nhà, ở nơi
thờ phượng hay ngoài nghĩa trang. Hàng năm vào dịp Lễ các Thánh và các
Linh hồn, Giáo Hội khuyên và ban ân xá (indulgences) cho những ai viếng
nghĩa trang và cầu nguyện cho các linh hồn mà thân xác đang nằm nghỉ nơi
đó. Vậy nếu quăng xác xuống biển cho cá ăn hay thả tro xác hoả thiêu
xuống nước cho tan ngoài sông ngoài biển thì lấy gì hay nơi nào cụ thể
để cho người còn sống đến thăm viếng và cầu nguyện? Mặt khác, những
người không có niềm tin vào sự phục sinh của thân xác, mà chỉ quan niệm
rằng con người phải trở về với vũ trụ thiên nhiên sau khi chết, nên họ
đã hoả thiêu và thả tro xuống nước để nói lên sự hoà tan mà không trở về
hay sống lại như Giáo Hội Công Giáo tin. Vì thế, người Công Giáo không
được làm việc này vì không phù hợp với giaó lý của Giáo Hội về việc kính
trọng xác người đã chết, chờ ngày sống lại.<br>
