Một người cha nọ có 3 con trai. Ông vốn sinh ra nghèo khổ, nhưng nhờ
chuyên cần làm việc và nhờ cần kiệm, nên ông đã trở nên một điền chủ
giàu có. Lúc về già, khi đã gần đất xa trời, ông nghĩ đến việc chia gia
tài cho các con. Nhưng ông muốn thử xem đứa nào trong 3 con trai ông là
thông minh nhất, để ông có thể giao phó phần lớn gia tài của ông cho cậu
ta. Ông liền gọi 3 người con đến bên giường, trao cho mỗi người 5 đồng
bạc và bảo họ hãy ra chợ tìm mua thứ gì có thể lấp đầy căn phòng trơ
trọi mà ông đang nằm đây. Ba người con vâng lời cha, cầm tiền ra đi.</span></p>

Người con trai cả nghĩ đây là một công việc quá dễ dàng. Anh ra chợ mua

đắn đo, bỗng mắt cậu sáng lên: cậu đã nghĩ ra mình phải mua thứ gì. Cậu
liền đến ngay tiệm tạp hóa, mua một cây đèn cày và một hộp diêm.</span></p>

Ngày hôm sau, cả 3 con trai đều tụ tập lại trong căn phòng của người cha
già và mỗi người đều mang theo quà tặng của mình. Người con cả lấy rơm
trải ra nền nhà, nhưng căn phòng quá lớn, số rơm cậu mua chỉ trải được
một góc nền nhà. Đến lượt cậu con thứ mang lông vịt ra trải, nhưng rồi
cũng chỉ lấp đầy được 2 góc nền nhà. Thấy vậy, người cha tỏ vẻ hơi thất
vọng. Bấy giờ người con út mới đứng ra giữa phòng, trong tay cậu chẳng
có món gì cả. Hai người anh tò mò nhìn em chăm chú, rồi hỏi: “ Chú mày
không mua gì hết à”</span></p>

Người cha rất sung sướng vì món quà tặng của người con út. Thế là ông
quyết định trao phần lớn ruộng đất và gia sản của mình cho cậu con trai
út, bởi vì ông nhận thấy cậu có đủ thông minh để có thể quản lý gia sản
của ông và cũng nhờ đó có thể giúp đỡ các anh em sau này.</span></p>
