Các con thân mến, này là sự chúng ta tin tưởng nơi Chúa: là hễ chúng ta xin
sự gì hợp ý Người, thì Người nhậm lời chúng ta. Và chúng ta biết Người nghe
nhận mọi điều chúng ta xin, vì chúng ta biết rằng chúng ta có kêu cầu Người.
Ai biết anh em mình phạm thứ tội không đưa tới sự chết, thì hãy cầu xin và
Người sẽ ban sự sống cho kẻ phạm thứ tội đó. Có thứ tội đưa đến sự chết, tôi
không bảo ai cầu xin cho người phạm tội ấy đâu. Mọi sự gian tà đều là tội,
và có thứ tội đưa đến sự chết.</p>

Chúng ta biết rằng ai sinh ra bởi Thiên Chúa, thì không phạm tội, chính sự
sinh ra bởi Thiên Chúa gìn giữ họ, và ma quỷ không làm gì được họ. Chúng ta
biết rằng chúng ta bởi Thiên Chúa mà ra, và toàn thể thế gian đều phục luỵ
ma quỷ. Và chúng ta biết rằng Con Thiên Chúa đã đến và đã ban cho chúng ta
ơn thông hiểu, để chúng ta nhận biết Chúa chân thật, và được ở trong Con
chân thật của Người. Chính Ngài là Thiên Chúa chân thật và là sự sống đời
đời. Các con thân mến, hãy giữ mình xa các tà thần. Đó là lời Chúa.</p>

Khi ấy, Chúa Giêsu cùng các môn đệ Người đến đất Giuđêa. Người ở lại đó với
họ và làm phép rửa. Cũng có Gioan làm phép rửa tại Ainon, gần Salim, vì ở đó
có nhiều nước, và người ta đến để chịu rửa. Vì chưng, khi ấy Gioan chưa bị
tống ngục. Xảy ra có cuộc tranh luận giữa các môn đệ của Gioan và người
Do-thái về việc thanh tẩy. Họ đến cùng Gioan và nói với ông: "Thưa Thầy,
người đã ở với Thầy bên kia sông Giođan, mà Thầy đã làm chứng cho, nay cũng
làm phép rửa và ai nấy đều đến cùng người!" Gioan trả lời rằng: "Người ta
không tiếp nhận gì mà không phải bởi trời ban cho. Chính các ngươi đã làm
chứng cho tôi là tôi đã nói: Tôi không phải là Đấng Kitô, nhưng tôi được sai
đến trước Người. Ai cưới vợ, thì là người chồng, còn bạn hữu của tân lang
đứng mà nghe tân lang nói thì vui mừng vì tiếng nói của tân lang. Vậy niềm
vui của tôi như thế là đầy đủ. Người phải lớn lên, còn tôi phải nhỏ lại". </p>

<strong>Suy niệm:</strong> Chưa bao giờ trong lịch sử Do Thái lại xuất hiện
một phong trào độc đáo như thế khi cả một quốc gia bày tỏ lòng hoán cải, chờ
mong Đấng Cứu Thế. Thử tưởng tượng dòng người từ bắc chí nam đến với ông
Gio-an, dìm mình vào dòng nước sông Gio-đan mát lạnh. Vậy mà bây giờ dòng
sông bên này trở nên lặng lẽ, thiên hạ đang đổ xô theo ông thầy Giê-su cũng
làm phép rửa ở dòng sông bên kia. Đang khi môn đệ ưu sầu, thì ông Gio-an lại
vui mừng; trong lúc học trò ghen tức, ông thầy lại hân hoan! Nếu là nhân vật
số hai, ta muốn trở thành nhân vật số một. Thế mà đang là nhân vật chính,
Gio-an lại vui lòng trở thành nhân vật phụ khi nhân vật chính xuất hiện. Ông
chấp nhận mình là người phù rể, vui mừng vì đã đưa chú rể (Đức Ki-tô) sum
họp, hạnh phúc với cô dâu (dân Chúa). Đã đến lúc ông an tâm rút lui vào hậu
trường.</p>

<strong>Mời Bạn:</strong> Giáo phận, giáo xứ, hội đoàn, hội dòng... sẽ tốt
đẹp, phát triển nếu ai ai cũng sẵn lòng đóng vai phụ, vì ý thức chỉ có một
vai chính là Đức Ki-tô. Đưa người khác đến với Chúa, chứ không đến với mình;
gắn bó với Chúa thay vì gắn kết với mình. Vui vẻ, không đố kỵ tin rằng mọi
vai chính-phụ đều có giá trị như nhau trước mặt Chúa.</p>

<strong><u>Suy niệm</u>:</strong> Người sứ giả không nói về mình mà nói lời
của người sai mình. Gioan đã thể hiện xuất sắc vai trò sứ giả đó cho đến
giây phút cuối cùng. Trước nguy cơ tranh dành ảnh hưởng giữa các môn đệ mình
và môn đệ Đức Giêsu – mà sau này điều đó đã thực sự xảy ra – Gioan, từ trong
ngục, nhắc nhở cho các môn đệ của mình nhớ lại vai trò ngôn sứ-chứng nhân
của họ: giới thiệu Đức Kitô, chứ không phải giới thiệu mình; hướng dẫn người
khác đến với Đức Kitô, chứ không phải giữ chặt họ ở lại với mình. Không cần
lý luận cao siêu, Gioan đã làm điều mà các nhà thần học ngày nay gọi là một
nền thần học quy Kitô (christocentric).</p>
