quyền Palestine dự tính tân trang lại nhà thờ Máng Cỏ đã có từ 1500
năm nay tại thị trấn Bethlehem ở bờ Tây sông Jordan, từ trước đến
nay vẫn được coi là nơi chúa Ki Tô ra đời. Chỗ cần được khẩn cấp tu
sửa là mái gỗ bị dột làm nhiều đồ trang trí như đồ khảm và các họa
phẩm vô giá của nhà thờ bị hư hại. Cũng lại có những lo ngại về mối
nguy các kèo cột, xà ngang bị mục nát có thể rơi vào du khách ở phía
dưới.</span></p>

thờ chưa hề được tu sửa trong hơn 500 năm vì những tranh chấp giữa 3
hệ phái Thiên Chúa giáo quản trị nhà thờ: đó là Công giáo, Thiên
Chúa giáo chính thống Hy Lạp và Thiên Chúa giáo Armenia. Nhưng trong
tinh thần thiện chí của ngày lễ Giáng Sinh, họ đã thỏa thuận dẹp
những bất đồng sang một bên.</span></p>

Máng Cỏ là nơi thu hút du khách nhiều nhất cho thẩm quyền Palestine,
mỗi năm có chừng 2 triệu người đến viếng. Việc trùng tu nhà thờ sẽ
tốn kém khoảng 10 đến 15 triệu đô la, và sẽ được chính phủ của người
Palestine và những cơ quan tặng giữ quốc tế tài trợ.</span></p>

tại nơi đất thánh, tôn giáo không bao giờ cách xa chính trị. Việc
trùng tu là một phần trong nỗ lực của Palestine để Liên Hiệp Quốc
công nhận Palestine là một quốc gia. Hoa Kỳ và Israel chống đối việc
người Palestine vận động tự ý thành lập quốc gia độc lập. Hai nước
này nói rằng chỉ có thể đạt tới một quốc gia cho người Palestine qua
đường lối thương thuyết.</span></p>
