Chứng cứ đầu tiên về hang Bê lem được tìm thấy trong quyển sách của ông Justin Martyr viết vào khoảng năm 160. <br>Năm 327 thánh nữ Helène, mẹ của hoàng đế Constantin I cho xây cất nhà thờ Giáng Sinh. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: normal; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0"><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif">Năm 529 nhà thờ bị đốt cháy trong cuộc nỗi dậy Samaritan. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: normal; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0"><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif">Năm 565 hoàng đế Justinian I cho xây dựng lại và tồn tại đến nay.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: normal; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0"><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif">Khi Bê lem bị người Ba Tư xâm chiếm vào năm 614, viên chỉ huy Shahrbaraz đã không ra lệnh tiêu hủy nhà thờ này vì nhìn thấy hình ba vị Vua phương Đông với trang phục của dân Ba Tư. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: normal; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0"><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif">Trong các lần chiến tranh với Hồi giáo, nhà thờ đã ngụy trang bằng cách làm cổng vào nhỏ lại và mặt tiền không có vẽ là nhà thờ.
