tiến tới cung thánh trong Thánh Lễ chủ tế và các thừa tác viên
chào kính Bàn Thờ. Họ hôn Bàn Thờ như một cử chỉ tôn kính. Việc
này đã thực hiện từ những ngày đầu của lịch sử Giáo Hội từ những
thực hành ngoại giáo: Người ngoại giáo thường dùng cái hôn để
chào nhau và bày tỏ sự kính tôn đối với những đền thờ và những
hình ảnh của các thần minh. Một tục lệ nữa là việc hôn bàn ăn
trước khi dùng bữa ăn gia đình vì những người tham dự là những
người dù chủ hay khách đều là người nhà của các thần minh.</span></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Times New Roman"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt">Lý
do đàng sau sự tôn kính trong phụng vụ Công giáo chúng ta là vì
Bàn Thờ là biểu tượng của Chúa Kitô (Chúa Kitô Thủ Lãnh và Tôn
Sư là chính Bàn Thờ chân thật). Bàn Thờ cũng là biểu tượng của
Cộng Đoàn Kytô hữu.</span></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Times New Roman"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt">Một
lý do nữa cho việc hôn kính Bàn Thờ là lòng sùng kính các Thánh
Tử Đạo mà thánh tích (relics) được khảm vào trong Bàn Thờ.</span></font></p>

Theo phụng vụ hiện hành, chủ tế chỉ hôn Bàn Thờ lúc đầu Thánh Lễ
