Theo giáo lý của Giáo Hội, "chọn lựa một cách có suy nghĩ, nghĩa
là biết và muốn một sự đối nghịch cách nặng nề với luật của Chúa
và với cùng đích tối hậu của con người, là phạm một tội trọng.
Tội trọng phá hủy đức ái ở trong ta, mà thiếu đức ái thì không
thể có vinh phúc vĩnh cửu. Nếu không hối cải, tội trọng sẽ đưa
con người tới sự chết muôn đời" (GLCG 1874). Do đó, dù người ta
có lập bao nhiêu công phúc mà cố tình phạm một tội trọng thì
"luống công" hết, mất hết. Khi đức ái bị phá hủy tức là cắt đứt
mối tương quan thiện hảo đối với Thiên Chúa và đặt mình vào tình
trạng đối nghịch với Ngài. Trong tình trạng đó thì những điều mà
ta gọi là công nghiệp có nghĩa lý gì nữa. Nhưng ta có thể hy
vọng, sau khi ta đã thống hối và trở lại với Chúa, làm hòa với
Ngài, phục hồi lại ơn thánh sủng thì rất có thể Chúa sẽ thương
xót "đếm kể" cho cách nào những "thành tích" cũ. Chúng ta cũng
hiểu ý niệm về công nghiệp không hẳn là "quyền lợi" tuyệt đối
của con người vì đối với Thiên Chúa Ngài không mắc nợ ai. Ngài
tự ý thương chúng ta, ban cho ta sự hiện hữu và hứa ban phần
thưởng cho những ai khi có ơn nghĩa với Ngài (tình trạng sống
trong ơn sủng) mà thực hành những việc lành. </font></span></td>
