Trước kia các em giúp lễ đều là trẻ phái nam, nhưng từ năm 1994,
theo thư luân lưu của Bộ Phượng Tự và Kỷ Luật Bí Tích, Giáo Hội
đã cho phép các Giám Mục Giáo Phận có thể cho phép các em nữ
cũng được giúp lễ. Giáo Hội để tùy quyền các Giám Mục Giáo Phận
quyết định về vấn đề này. Trong thư gửi cho các Giám Mục, Bộ
Phượng Tự cũng lưu ý các Giám Mục không được bắt ép các linh mục
xứ phải nhận các em nữ vào giúp lễ (xem Congregation for Divine
Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Circular Letter to
the Presidents of Episcopal Conferences, Prot. n. 2482/93, March
15, 1994; and the letter, protocol number 2451/00/L, dated July
27, 2001).</font></span></td>
