Việc uống nước thánh (nước đã làm phép) như một cử chỉ bày tỏ
niềm tin tưởng vào quyền phép của Thiên Chúa và cầu xin ơn chữa
lành, đó là điều tốt lành. Nhưng coi nước thánh như một dấu
“bùa” phù phép tự nó có công hiệu chữa lành (ma thuật) thì đó là
“mê tín, dị đoan.” Việc rảy nước phép hay làm dấu với nước phép
được kể là “Á bí tích” tức là dấu hiệu linh thánh, phần nào
giống như các bí tích, nhờ đó các hiệu quả, nhất là các hiệu quả
thiêng liêng được nói lên và đạt được nhờ lời cầu nguyện của
Giáo Hội (xem GLCG 1667). Do đó, việc sử dụng nước thánh nên
dùng như á bí tích – một hình thức cầu nguyện, tuyên xưng niềm
tin và nhắc lại bí tích Rửa tội chứ không sử dụng như một “ảo
thuật.”</font></span></td>
