Theo luật của Giáo Hội, một khi đã được bảy tuổi trọn thì được
suy đoán là biết sử dụng trí khôn. Người 18 tuổi trọn là người
trưởng thành. Người trưởng thành được sử dụng đầy đủ các quyền
lợi của mình. Còn các vị thành niên, tức là chưa đủ 18 tuổi,
phải lệ thuộc quyền hành của cha mẹ hay người giám hộ, trừ những
phương diện nào mà các vị thành niên đã thoát quyền hành của
những người ấy do luật Thiên Chúa hay luật Giáo Hội (xem Giáo
Luật, điều 97 §§1,2; điều 98). Việc theo đạo là quyền căn bản
của con người do thiên luật, nên dù chưa đủ tuổi trưởng thành,
người ta vẫn có thể tự quyết định mà không cần xin phép gia
đình.</font></span></td>
