<font face="Times New Roman">Lễ các Thánh Anh Hài đã có một lịch
sử cổ kính trong Giáo Hội. Người ta có thể quả quyết không sợ
sai lầm rằng lễ này đã được Giáo Hội cử hành ngay từ cuối thế kỷ
III hay cuối thế kỷ IV. Những tín hữu đã kính nhớ các vị anh
hài đã chết thay cho Chúa Kitô trong cuộc sát hại được Tin Mừng
Mathêu ghi lại (Mt 2:16-18). Các vị này được ví như những nụ
hoa của Giáo Hội bị chết sớm do giá lạnh bách hại và đã được kể
là những vị tử vì đạo vì không những chết vì Chúa mà con chết
thay cho Chúa Giêsu ấu thơ <i>(theo bài giảng của Thánh
Augustinô - <span style="font-size: 12.0pt"> </span>"Sermo 10us
de sanctis")</i>. Trong sách phụng vụ Hy lạp người ta ước tính
con số các vị thánh anh hài có thể là 14,000 bé trai; những
người Syrians lại nói có thể tới 64,000 em. Một số tác giả thời
Trung Cổ lại ước đoán có tới 144,000 em căn cứ theo sách Khải
Huyền <i>(Kh 14:3)</i>. Nhưng các tác giả gần đây đã ước đoán
con số đó rất nhỏ, có thể chỉ vào khoảng 15 hay 20 em, vì Belem
là một làng phố rất nhỏ.</font></td>
