Phụng vụ theo nghĩa gốc của từ ngữ (liturgia) có nghĩa là công
vụ, là sự phục vụ của hoặc cho dân chúng. Trong Kitô giáo, từ
phụng vụ chỉ sự Dân Chúa dự phần vào “công cuộc của Thiên Chúa”.
Phụng vụ là việc thờ phượng công cộng của Giáo Hội. Công Đồng
Vatican II đã nói lên tính cách quan trọng khi viết: “Tất cả các
cử hành phụng vụ, xét như là công việc của Chúa Kitô linh mục và
Thân Thể Ngài là Giáo Hội, đều là hành động linh thánh cao cả,
không một hành động nào khác của Giáo Hội có thể đạt được mức
hiệu năng như thế: (SC 7).</font></span></p>
