tuổi 86, ĐGM Polycarp của GP Smyrna, thế kỷ II, là môn đệ của Thánh
Gioan Tông đồ, đã bị đưa ra trước chính quyền La Mã và buộc phải gọi
hoàng đế Xê-da (Caesar) là chúa. Làm vậy sẽ được sống, nhưng ĐGM
Polycarp đã từ chối và bị giết chết, gợi hứng cho những người khác giữ
đức tin.</font></span></h2>

Ngoài chuyện của ĐGM Polycarp, không là điều khác thường để gọi hoàng đế
Xê-da là </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">kurios</font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial">,
tiếng Hy Lạp có nghĩa là “chúa”. Theo nguyên ngữ, </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">kurios </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial">có
thể có nghĩa là “ngài” theo cách nói lịch sự khi nói đến người khác.
Cũng có thể có nghĩa là “chủ” của các nô lệ hoặc các tôi tớ. Tuy nhiên,
không có nghĩa này khi La Mã dùng danh xưng </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">kurios</font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial"> đối
với hoàng đế. Thay vì thế, </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">kurios</font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial"> biểu
hiện tính thần thánh khi dùng để nói về hoàng đế Xê-da. Là Kitô hữu, ĐGM
Polycarp không thể gọi hoàng đế Xê-da là chúa mà không vi phạm giáo lý
cơ bản nhất của đức tin: <i>“Ta là ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của ngươi, đã
đưa ngươi ra khỏi đất Ai-cập, khỏi cảnh nô lệ. Ngươi không được có thần
nào khác đối nghịch với Ta”</i> (</font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; color: windowtext; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none"><font face="Arial">Xh 20:2-3</font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial">).</font></span></h2>

Thi thoảng, Tân ước có thể mang ý nghĩa ít ca tụng trong danh từ </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">kurios</font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial"> khi
tôn xưng Đức Giêsu là Chúa, nhưng danh xưng này chắc chắn nói về Ngài
với ý nghĩa cao nhất. Như chúng ta biết, bản Cựu ước bằng cổ ngữ Hy Lạp
được gọi là Bản Bảy Mươi (Septuagint) dịch danh từ tiếng Do Thái </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">Yahweh</font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial"> (Gia-vê)
và </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">adonai </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial">đều
là </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">kurios</font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial">.
Gia-vê được mặc khải là Thánh Danh Chúa trong tiếng Do Thái và Adonai là
một trong các danh xưng của Ngài; như vậy, “Kurios” hoặc “Chúa” là danh
xưng cao trọng nhất dành cho Thiên Chúa trong Bản Bảy Mươi, được trích
dẫn trong suốt Tân ước.</font></span></h2>
<h2 style="text-align: justify; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial">
Khi </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt"><font face="Arial">kurios </font></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial">được
dùng theo nghĩa này, nó có nghĩa là “Đấng Tối Cao”. Đó là danh xưng uy
nghi, chuyển tải sự cao cả và quyền năng của Thiên Chúa, là bằng chứng
kiệt xuất về tính thánh của Chúa Giêsu khi được dùng để nói về Ngài.
Trong chương 2, thư gởi giáo đoàn Philípphê, Thánh Phaolô bàn về sự
khiêm nhường và sự tán dương Con Thiên Chúa, gọi Đức Giêsu là “Chúa” với
ý nghĩa tối cao. “Chúa” là Tôn Danh vượt trên mọi danh hiệu đã được dùng
cho Đấng Cứu Độ khi Chúa Cha tôn vinh Ngài (x. Pl 2:9-11).</font></span></h2>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal"><font face="Arial">Dĩ
nhiên, Thánh Phaolô không nói Con Thiên Chúa không xứng với danh hiệu
này trước khi Ngài hóa thành nhục thể vì chúng ta. Không, Thánh Phaolô
đang đề cao đức tuân phục hoàn toàn của Chúa Con, theo sau là cái chết
của Ngài vì tội lỗi chúng ta và sự phục sinh của Ngài, cho thấy rõ rằng
Đức Giêsu thực sự xứng đáng là Chúa muôn loài.</font></span></h2>

Các Kitô hữu như ĐGM Polycarp chịu tử đạo vì họ không chịu gọi hoàng đế
Xê-da là chúa. Họ biết rằng chỉ có Đức Giêsu là Chúa và không ai hơn
Ngài. Các Kitô hữu này biết rằng Tân ước không chỉ lịch sự khi gọi Đức
Giêsu là “Chúa”, mà còn dạy rằng Đức Giêsu là Thiên Chúa toàn năng. Các
thần tượng về tình dục, tiền bạc, quyền lực, uy thế,… có thể là các vua
chúa nếu chúng ta không cẩn trọng. Vì thế, chúng ta hãy luôn tuyên xưng:
<i>“Chỉ có Đức Giêsu Kitô là Thiên Chúa”</i>.</font></span></h2>
