<font face="Arial">Với chiều dài thân trung bình 2,5 m, cá mập hổ cát (<em>Carcharias
taurus</em>) phân bố khắp thế giới. Chúng sống trong những vùng nước gần
bờ biển. Tại Mỹ, người ta thường thấy chúng gần các bãi cát nên gọi
chúng là "cá mập hổ cát". </font></p>
<p class="normal" align="justify" style="margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Arial">Trong thời kỳ sinh sản, những con cái trong loài cá
mập hổ cát luôn giao phối với nhiều con đực. Quá trình mang thai của cá
mập hổ cát kéo dài gần một năm. Chúng thường đẻ hai con sau mỗi lần mang
thai.</font></p>
<p class="normal" align="justify" style="margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0">
<font face="Arial"><em>Livescience</em> đưa tin các nhà sinh học hải
dương của Đại học Stony Brook tại Mỹ phân tích phôi thai trong tử cung
của những con cá mập hổ cát (<em>Carcharias taurus</em>) trong nhiều
giai đoạn khác nhau của quá trình phát triển. Họ nhận thấy ban đầu số
lượng phôi thai trong bụng cá mập lên tới 12. Chúng là sản phẩm của
nhiều ông bố. Song số lượng phôi giảm dần theo thời gian do phôi lớn
nhất nuốt chửng những phôi còn lại. Ở thời điểm cuối cùng của thai kỳ,
chỉ còn hai phôi thai tồn tại trong dạ con, bao gồm phôi lớn nhất và một
phôi khác. Điều đáng chú ý là hai phôi đó thường có DNA giống nhau,
nghĩa là chúng có nguồn gốc từ một bố. </font></p>

ra, việc hai bào thai có nguồn gốc từ một bố cho thấy các phôi lớn có
thể nhận ra những "anh" hoặc "em" cùng bố nên chúng không tiêu diệt. Như
vậy, cá mập cái giao phối với nhiều cá đực, song chỉ một "anh chàng" có
cơ hội truyền gene cho thế hệ sau.</font></td>
