cây thiên niên kỷ nhiều nhất thế giới, với những cánh rừng lớn mọc
trên các sườn núi tuyết của dãy Sierra. Ở đây có cây được ghi nhận
cao thứ 2 thế giới với 3.200 năm tuổi. Đó chính là rừng cây

<font face="Arial">Cây Sequoias chỉ mọc và sinh trưởng trên sườn
phía Tây của dãy núi Sierra Nevada, với chiều dài 640 km chạy qua
Nevada và California. Những cây Sequoias khổng lồ có thể đạt đến
chiều cao 75m, tương đương một tòa nhà 20 tầng. Đặc biệt, thân những
cây Sequoias mọc thẳng đứng, không bị phân nhánh ở phía dưới trong
khi phần trên ngọn mọc thành tán, giống hệt những cây nấm khổng lồ.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Chính vì sự kỳ thú đó, nhiếp ảnh gia Michael
Nichols đã không quản khó khăn, gian khổ cùng điều kiện thời tiết
khắc nghiệt, luôn bị bao phủ bởi tuyết dày để đi sâu vào khu vực
phía nam, chụp ảnh cây “chủ tịch”, cây Sequoias cao nhất khu rừng và
cao thứ 2 thế giới. Đi cùng với ông còn có đoàn thám hiểm của <i>
National Geographic</i> tới khám phá khu rừng.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 0" align="justify">
<font face="Arial">Các nhà khoa học cho biết, những cây Sequoias
buộc phải vươn mình lên thật cao nhằm đón ánh sáng trong điều kiện
sống khắc nghiệt tại khu rừng. Đồng hành với đó là bộ rễ bám sâu
xuống lòng đất, tạo cho cây đứng vững chắc và cung cấp nguồn dưỡng
chất dồi dào cho sự phát triển của Sequoias. Khác với động vật, cây
cối có thể lớn mãi cho tới khi chết nên tầm cao của chúng thường
không bị giới hạn.</font></p>

<font face="Arial">Ngoài ra, kích thước khổng lồ còn cho phép
Sequoias sống sót được sau những đại thảm họa, khi mà kẻ địch tự
nhiên của chúng bị quét sạch. Thậm chí, những cây Sequoias còn bền
bỉ đến mức sống sót sau khi bị sét đánh hoặc cháy rừng tàn phá, khi
những loại cây khác cúi đầu chào thua. Chính những khả năng đó làm
nên tuổi thọ vô địch trong loài cây của Sequoias.</font></p>
