Người ta nghĩ rằng Thánh Valentine đã từng là linh mục ở Rôma cũng như
là một y sĩ. Vì không chịu từ bỏ đức tin, ngài được tử đạo vào ngày 14
tháng Hai. Chúng ta không biết gì nhiều về ngài, nhưng ngay vào khoảng
năm 350, một nhà thờ đã được xây cất nơi ngài tử đạo.</span></p>

Truyền thuyết nói rằng ngài là một linh mục thánh thiện đã cùng với
Thánh Marius giúp đỡ các vị tử đạo trong thời Claudius II. Ngài bị bắt,
và bị gửi cho tổng trấn Rôma xét xử. Sau khi dụ dỗ mọi cách nhưng đều vô
hiệu, quan tổng trấn đã ra lệnh cho lính dùng gậy đánh đập ngài, sau đó
đưa đi chém đầu vào ngày 14 tháng Hai, khoảng năm 269. Người ta nói rằng
Ðức Giáo Hoàng Julius I đã cho xây một nhà thờ gần Ponte Mole để kính
nhớ ngài.</span></p>

Nhiều giả thuyết khác nhau về nguồn gốc việc cử hành ngày Valentine. Một
số cho rằng người Rôma có một tập tục vào giữa tháng Hai, trong ngày ấy
các con trai tô điểm tên các cô con gái để tỏ lòng tôn kính nữ thần dâm
dục là Februata Juno.</span></p>

Các tu sĩ thời ấy muốn dẹp bỏ tập tục này nên đã thay thế bằng tên các
thánh tỉ như Thánh Valentine. Một số khác cho rằng thói quen gửi thiệp
Valentine vào ngày 14 tháng Hai là vì người tin tin rằng các con chim
bắt đầu sống thành cặp vào ngày này, là ngày Thánh Valentine bị chém
đầu.</span></p>

Dường như chắc chắn hơn cả là vào năm 1477, người Anh thường liên kết
các đôi uyên ương với ngày lễ Thánh Valentine, vì vào ngày này, 14 tháng
Hai, "mọi chim đực đi tìm chim mái ." Tục lệ này trở thành thói quen cho
các đôi trai gái viết thư tình cho nhau vào ngày Valentine. Và ngày nay,
các cánh thiệp, quà cáp và thư từ trao cho nhau là một phần của việc cử
