Thánh Gilbert sinh ở Sempringham, Anh Quốc, con của hiệp sĩ Jocelin
người Norman nổi tiếng giầu có. Nhưng ngài lại theo đuổi một con đường
khác hẳn với những gì mà gia đình ngài dành sẵn. Ðược gửi sang Pháp để
tiếp tục học lên cao, nhưng ngài lại quyết định theo đuổi ơn gọi tu trì.</span></p>

Ngài trở về Anh dù chưa là linh mục, và được thừa hưởng nhiều bất động
sản của cha ngài để lại. Nhưng Gilbert không muốn một đời sống thoải mái
như bất cứ lúc nào ngài cũng có thể. Thay vào đó, ngài sống một cuộc đời
đơn giản tại một giáo xứ, và chia sẻ của cải với người nghèo bao nhiêu
có thể. Sau khi được thụ phong linh mục, ngài phục vụ ở Sempringham.</span></p>

Trong giáo xứ có bảy cô thanh nữ muốn sống đời tu trì và họ đã đến xin
Cha Gilbert giúp đỡ. Ngài cho xây một căn nhà cạnh nhà thờ. Ở đó họ sống
khắc khổ, nhưng lại thu hút nhiều người đến với họ; dần dà số nam nữ
giáo dân đến giúp đỡ họ ngày càng đông. Sau khi một vài cơ sở được thành
hình, Cha Gilbert đến Citaux để xin các tu sĩ ở đây tiếp tục trông coi
Cộng Ðoàn. </span></p>

Khi các tu sĩ Xitô từ chối việc dẫn dắt nhóm phụ nữ này, với sự chấp
thuận của Ðức Giáo Hoàng Eugene III, Cha Gilbert tiếp tục trông coi Cộng
Ðoàn với quy luật riêng mà ngài là bề trên. Cộng đoàn được biết đến dưới
tên Dòng Gilbertin, và là tu hội duy nhất được thành lập ở Anh trong
thời Trung Cổ. Trước khi tu hội phải giải tán vì Vua Henri VIII ngăn cấm
tất cả các tu viện Công Giáo ở Anh, Dòng Gilbertin có đến hai mươi sáu
tu viện.</span></p>

Quy luật của dòng rất nghiêm nhặt, nổi tiếng khắc khổ và lưu tâm đến
người nghèo. Một thói quen đặc biệt dần dà xuất hiện trong các tu viện
của Dòng Gilbertin được gọi là “đĩa của Chúa Giêsu”. Trong đĩa đặc biệt
ấy là các phần chia sẻ thức ăn của mỗi tu sĩ và sau đó họ chia sẻ thức
ăn trong đĩa ấy cho người nghèo, nói lên sự lưu tâm đặc biệt của Cha
Gilbert đối với những người kém may mắn.</span></p>

Trong suốt cuộc đời, Cha Gilbert sống thật đơn giản, ăn rất ít và dành
nhiều thời giờ ban đêm để cầu nguyện. Bất kể những khắc khổ của cuộc
sống, ngài từ trần khi trên 100 tuổi.</span></p>
