Duns trong quận Berwick, Tô Cách Lan, John thuộc dòng dõi một gia đình
giầu có. Trong những năm về sau, ngài được gọi là John Duns Scotus để
ghi dấu nơi sinh trưởng. (“Scotus” là chữ Latinh thay cho “Scotland” [Tô
Cách Lan]).</span></p>

áo dòng Phanxicô ở Dumfries, mà bác của ngài là Cha Elias Duns làm bề
trên. Sau thời kỳ tập viện, John theo học ở Oxford và Paris và thụ phong
linh mục năm 1291. Sau đó, ngài tiếp tục theo học ở Paris cho đến năm
1297, ngài trở về làm giáo sư ở Oxford và Cambridge. Bốn năm sau, ngài
trở lại Paris để dạy học và hoàn tất luận án tiến sĩ.</span></p>

đại mà nhiều người chấp nhận các hệ tư tưởng không có giá trị, thì John
đã vạch ra sự phong phú của truyền thống Phanxicô-Augustinô, quý trọng
sự uyên thâm của Thánh Aquinas, của Aristotle và các triết gia Hồi Giáo
– nhưng ngài vẫn duy trì là một nhà tư tưởng độc lập. Ðiều đó được chứng
tỏ, khi Hoàng Ðế Philip, trong một tranh chấp với Ðức Giáo Hoàng
Boniface VIII năm 1303, đã cố chiếm lấy Ðại Học Paris về phía mình. John
Duns Scotus bất đồng ý, và được lệnh phải rời Pháp trong vòng ba ngày.</span></p>

thời đại của John Duns Scotus, một số triết gia chủ trương rằng, con
người bị định đoạt bởi các động lực ở bên ngoài cá thể. Họ cho rằng, sự
tự do của ý muốn là một ảo tưởng. Là một người rất thực tế, John lý luận
rằng nếu tôi đánh một người nào đó, mà họ khước từ sự tự do của ý muốn,
thì ngay lập tức người ấy bảo tôi ngừng tay. Nhưng nếu tôi thực sự không
có tự do ý muốn, làm sao tôi có thể ngừng tay? John đã khéo léo đưa ra
một thí dụ mà ai ai cũng dễ nhớ!</span></p>

thời gian ở Oxford, ngài trở về Paris, là nơi ngài lấy bằng tiến sĩ năm
1305. Ngài tiếp tục dạy ở đây, và vào năm 1307 ngài đã bảo vệ đặc tính
Vô Nhiễm Nguyên Tội của Ðức Maria, mà sau cùng đại học đã chính thức
công nhận lập trường của ngài. Cùng năm đó, bề trên tổng quyền bổ nhiệm
ngài về trông coi trường của dòng Phanxicô ở Cologne, mà ngài đã từ trần
ở đây năm 1308.</span></p>

“Tiến Sĩ Khôn Ngoan”, được phong Chân Phước năm 1993.</span></p>

Charles Balic, O.F.M., người có uy tín nhất của thế kỷ 20 về Chân Phước
Scotus, đã viết: “Toàn bộ thần học của Scotus đều quy hướng về đức ái.
Ðặc tính nổi bật của đức ái là sự tự do tuyệt đối. Khi đức ái ngày càng
trở nên tuyệt hảo và sâu đậm, sự tự do trở nên cao quý và trọn vẹn hơn

thái ít khi đảm bảo sự thánh thiện. Nhưng John Duns Scotus không chỉ là
một người tài giỏi, mà ngài còn là một người khiêm tốn và siêng năng cầu
nguyện – đó chính là sự tổng hợp mà Thánh Phanxicô muốn nơi bất cứ tu sĩ
nào có học thức. Vào lúc phong trào dân tộc chủ nghĩa ở Pháp đe dọa
quyền lợi của đức giáo hoàng, John Duns Scotus đã đứng về phía Giáo hội
và phải gánh chịu mọi hậu quả. Ngài cũng bảo vệ sự tự do của con người
đối với những ai thỏa hiệp sự tự do ấy với chủ thuyết tất định
(determinism).</span></p>
