Viết về sự thánh thiện thì không dễ dàng gì. Cũng đừng có ai mong muốn
điều đó như vậy, bởi vì sự lưu loát là điều cuối cùng chúng ta cần khi
giáp mặt với những mầu nhiệm của ân sủng. Đặc biệt điều này xảy ra khi
bản thân tác giả có rất ít sự thánh thiện để khoác lác về sự thánh
thiện. Nhưng, thế thì, ngay cả nhà văn lớn Bernanos, là người đã cất
tiếng thể hiện linh hồn của nước Pháp Công Giáo, đã có thể thoát khỏi
những giới hạn do thực tế đó áp đặt. Khi được mời thuyết trình cho một
nhóm các nữ tu - tất cả những nữ tử của Cha Charles de Foucauld tử vì
đạo - về chủ đề sự thánh thiện, Bernanos đã thú nhận sự bất xứng hoàn
toàn của mình, ông nói với khán giả rằng ông “liều lĩnh” biết chừng nào
khi “dám nói về một đất nước mà tôi chưa bao giờ đặt chân đến… ” Và theo
sự mạo muội của chính mình, mặc dù ông nhận mình là “một lữ khách dày

Tất nhiên, sự liều lĩnh dám tỏ ra mình là người hoàn toàn nực cười, nhận
ra bản thân mình hoàn toàn không có khả năng, thậm chí càng rõ ràng lố
lăng hơn trong trường hợp nói về những gương mẫu thực sự thánh thiện phi
thường này. Ví dụ, sự thánh thiện tuyệt đối trong cuộc đời Thánh Giuse
mà chúng ta đánh giá một cách đúng đắn là cao hơn bất kỳ một phàm nhân
hay chết nào khác. Chắc chắn là ngoại trừ Chúa Kitô của chúng ta và Mẹ
Cực Thánh Vô Nhiễm của Ngài, là Đấng đã được đầy ơn phúc hơn nhiều so
với những gì thánh Giuse có thể khao khát trở thành. Điều đó hẳn thật
gây bối rối cho người đàn ông tội nghiệp, ngày này qua ngày khác, thấy
mình “phải sống” giữa Ngôi Lời Nhập Thể và Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm Nguyên Tội!
Có gì ngạc nhiên đâu khi thánh Giuse không nói lên được lời nào? Phải

Mặt khác, Thánh Giuse có bao giờ là một người nói huyên thuyên không? Sự
im lặng chắc chắn là hành trang mạnh mẽ của ngài trong suốt cuộc đời.
Ngay cả sau khi thiên thần hiện ra trong giấc mơ để khuyên ngài đừng từ
chối cho phép Đức Maria sống trong nhà của ngài, bởi vì đứa trẻ mà Mẹ
sinh ra là Con Thiên Chúa hằng sống, Đấng đã từ trời xuống để “cứu dân
Ngài khỏi tội lỗi” (Mátthêu 1:21). Giuse vẫn không nói lời nào. Thay vào
đó ngài hành động, với một sự nhanh nhạy đáng ngưỡng mộ và đáng kinh
ngạc nhất. Nhưng đó khó có thể là một điều dễ dàng đối với ngài. Tuy
nhiên, khi nhẫn nhục chịu đựng cụ thể như thế, ngài đã bộc lộ một trái
tim chính trực và kiên quyết nhất. Thật vậy, khi sẵn sàng phục vụ người
phụ nữ mình yêu thương, thay vì đưa cô ấy ra trước pháp luật, chúng ta
thấy sự vĩ đại của người đàn ông, mà cuộc đời của ông héo mòn trong nỗi
nhớ về một lời hứa xa xưa được ban cho dân Thiên Chúa, mà ngài với tư
cách là một người con đích thực của dòng dõi Đavít đang khao khát được
thấy điều đó hoàn thành. Và giữa những chi tiết chán ngấy nhất của một
cuộc sống hoàn toàn bình thường, bị che giấu suốt những năm tháng ở
Nadarét, ai sẽ sớm được thấy tất cả những gì đã được Thiên Chúa hứa hẹn
giữa Mẹ và Con của Mẹ — những người mà ông, Giuse, đang được yêu cầu gìn

Tại sao Giáo Hội lại áp dụng tất cả các tước hiệu đó cho một người không
tiếng tăm gì và khiêm tốn như Giuse? Không có vị thánh nào khác nơi
thiên đàng bảo trợ cho cả Giáo Hội địa phương và Giáo Hội hoàn vũ. Cũng
không có vị thánh nào mà những người lao động, hoặc những người sắp
chết, có thể chạy đến kêu cầu với sự tin tưởng tuyệt đối, vì Ngài là
đấng bảo trợ của họ? Chỉ có Thánh Giuse là người mà Giáo hội yêu cầu
chúng ta tôn vinh như là hình mẫu của sự dũng cảm chịu đựng và sự hoàn

Tuy nhiên, đối với tất cả điều đó, trong câu chuyện đáng kinh ngạc về ơn
cứu độ của chúng ta, phần riêng của Ngài được tỏ hiện ra rất nhiều, dù
lờ mờ, trong câu chuyện kể, nhưng chính ngài lại không kể nó. Chứng tỏ
sự khiêm tốn thì hùng hồn hơn cả lời nói. Tôi tự hỏi, điều gì đã đưa
Ngài đến sự dâng hiến cực độ như thế, trong sự dâng hiến đó, tất cả cuộc
đời và từng khoảnh khắc cuộc đời của Ngài là sự tận tụy hoàn hảo và
không ngưng nghỉ đối với Mẹ Maria và Hài nhi mầu nhiệm mà Mẹ cưu mang?
Một sự thuận phục mặc nhiên, chúng ta đừng quên, mà ngài không buộc phải

Cha Jacques Philippe, trong một cuốn sách nhỏ tuyệt vời mang tên Tự do
Nội tâm [1], nhắc nhở chúng ta rằng kinh nghiệm về tự do đích thực rất
thường xuyên đòi hỏi phải chấp nhận điều mà chúng ta không thể thay đổi.
Cha gọi đó là “quy luật nghịch lý của cuộc sống con người”, phát triển
từ sự thừa nhận rằng “người ta không thể thực sự tự do trừ khi người ta
chấp nhận không phải lúc nào cũng được tự do”. Nói cách khác, những
khoảnh khắc mà chúng ta có nhiều khả năng trưởng thành trong tư cách một
con người – nghĩa là mở rộng tầm thánh thiện của chính mình, như nó vốn
có - chính xác lại là những thời điểm mà chúng ta không còn cơ hội để
thao túng và làm chủ tình hình. Nhưng vì cuộc sống chủ yếu là một ân
huệ, vậy tại sao chuyện chúng ta không thể cai quản mọi thứ lại trở nên

Ánh sáng của nghịch lý đó đổ trên cuộc đời của Thánh Giuse buốt thấu như
thế nào. Chẳng hạn, liệu chừng ngài có thể đã hình dung ra được một tình
huống nào khác mà trong đó, xét theo bề ngoài, Ngài mất tự do hơn tình
huống xuất phát từ việc vị hôn thê của Ngài sinh cho Ngài một đứa con
không thuộc về Ngài không? Để cam chịu một tình huống không phải chính
mình gây ra? Phải nói những dòng thoại của một kịch bản mà không phải do
chính Ngài viết? Phải chăng Ngài không có lựa chọn nào khác? Cha
