Trước hết, tôi xin trần tình một chút: Trong các bài viết, bài
dịch và thơ, tôi THÍCH dùng cách xưng hô với Dưỡng Phụ của Chúa
Giêsu là “Đức Thánh Giuse”. Nhiều người cảm thấy “dị ứng” với
cách gọi như vậy, vì xưa nay chúng ta quen dùng danh xưng Thánh
Cả Giuse, có lẽ vì vậy mà người phụ trách một website Công giáo
ở Việt Nam (không biết tuổi nhỏ hay lớn) đã gởi mail cho tôi và
“hồn nhiên” thắc mắc: “Tại sao có cách gọi là Đức Thánh Giuse mà
không là Thánh Cả Giuse?”.</div>

Hồi còn tuổi thiếu niên, khoảng năm 1973-1975, tôi nhớ có đọc
một cuốn sách có tựa đề là “Đức Thánh Giuse, Phu Quân Đức Mẹ”,
rất tiếc là bây giờ tôi không còn nhớ được tên tác giả. Khi đó,
tự dưng tôi rất ấn tượng, và cách gọi đó đã “ăn sâu” trong tâm
trí tôi. Riêng tôi thấy cách gọi đó không chỉ HAY mà còn HỢP LÝ.</div>

Theo kiến thức thô thiển của tôi, về danh xưng trong Việt ngữ,
khi dùng từ ĐỨC trước một danh xưng là để tỏ lòng kính trọng, vì
người đó có uy tín “lớn”. Trong Anh ngữ, Pháp ngữ,… tôi không
thấy có từ “Đức” riêng biệt như Việt ngữ. Chúng ta dùng cách gọi
Đức Giavê, Đức Chúa Cha, Đức Chúa Con, Đức Chúa Trời, Đức Chúa,
Đức Giêsu, Đức Kitô, Đức Chúa Thánh Thần, Đức Thánh Linh. Tất
nhiên về Thiên Chúa thì “miễn bàn”, khỏi phải tranh luận, thậm
chí danh xưng đó chỉ là cách diễn đạt của con người, ngôn từ
trần gian chỉ đến vậy, chưa hoàn toàn xứng tầm với Thiên Chúa.</div>

Về Việt ngữ, từ “Chúa” cũng chưa đủ mức để diễn tả Thiên Chúa,
thế nên khi các linh mục Tây phương sang truyền giáo đã kết hợp
cách dùng Âu-Việt để gọi Thiên Chúa là “Chúa Dêu” – có lẽ kết
hợp từ Pháp ngữ là Dieu (đi-ơ) chăng? (Chữ Dieu có cách viết gần
giống với chữ “diêu” của Việt ngữ).</div>

Tiếp theo, chúng ta dùng từ “Đức” với một thụ-tạo-đặc-biệt là
Đức Mẹ Maria – cũng gọi tắt là Đức Mẹ, Đức Maria, Đức Trinh Nữ.
Là Mẹ Thiên Chúa thì cũng dễ hiểu, miễn bàn. Vậy sao chúng ta
chỉ dùng Thánh Giuse hoặc Thánh Cả Giuse, là Dưỡng Phụ của Chúa
Giêsu và là Phu Quân của Đức Mẹ, mà lại không dùng danh xưng Đức
Giuse hoặc Đức Thánh Giuse? Ngài âm thầm, khiêm nhường, nhịn
nhục, lặng lẽ, không nói gì, nên bị lãng quên và bị… “coi
thường”? Với các thánh khác, chúng ta cũng chỉ dùng từ “thánh”:
Thánh Phêrô, Thánh Phaolô, Thánh Gioan, Thánh Anna, Thánh
Têrêsa,… Vậy Thánh Giuse cũng chẳng hơn gì các thánh khác.</div>

Đó là xét theo cách nghĩ của loài người, chứ chính Dưỡng Phụ của
Đấng Cứu Thế chẳng cần đâu!</div>

Với những người còn tại thế, còn đầy bản-chất-con-người, nghĩa
là còn khả năng sai lầm và tội lỗi, chưa thực sự là thánh, nhưng
chúng ta vẫn dùng từ “Đức” trước các danh xưng. Công giáo có Đức
Giáo hoàng (thậm chí là Đức Thánh Cha), Đức Hồng y, Đức Tổng
Giám mục, Đức Giám mục (Đức Cha), Đức Khâm sứ, Đức Ông, Đức Viện
phụ. Ông lớn hơn Cha, sao Đức Ông lại “nhỏ” hơn Đức Cha? Có bất
cập và mâu thuẫn?</div>

Chính thống giáo có Đức Thượng phụ. Phật giáo có Đức Phật, Đại
Đức (không chỉ “đức” bình thường mà còn “đại”). Cao Đài giáo có
Đức Giáo Chủ. Về phần đời có Đức Vua. Và một số vị nổi tiếng như
Đức Khổng Tử, Đức Dalai Lama,… Ngay cả người chồng bình thường
đôi khi còn được gọi bằng mỹ từ Đức Lang Quân kia mà!</div>

Nói chung, dùng từ “Đức” là để kính trọng. Vậy còn việc dùng từ
“Cả” khi gọi Thánh Cả? Nếu có Thánh Cả thì cũng có Thánh “Thứ”
(mức độ “nhỏ” hơn hoặc “thấp” hơn). “Cả” là từ miền Bắc. Ngôn
ngữ miền Nam và miền Trung gọi là “hai”, nếu vậy có thể (hoặc
“phải”) gọi Dưỡng Phụ của Chúa Giêsu là Thánh Hai (kiểu Anh Hai,
Chị Ba, Cô Tư, Thím Bảy, Dượng Út,…). Một anh bạn của tôi lý
luận: “Trong từ Thánh đã ngụ ý từ Đức”. Tôi hỏi lại: “Vậy tại
sao gọi Đức Thánh Cha?” (có cả “đức” và “thánh”). Người đó không
trả lời được và nói: “Thôi, cứ để Thánh Linh tác động”.</div>

Phàm ngữ nhiêu khê! Nói là nói vậy. Ngôn ngữ nào cũng có những
rắc rối và chưa đủ chuẩn để diễn đạt!</div>

Nếu dùng từ “Đức” làm mức cân-đo-đong-đếm thì Dưỡng Phụ Giuse
còn bị “lép vế” lắm, “thua” cả những người còn sống trên trần
gian này (!). Thiết tưởng cách xưng hô Đức Giuse, Đức Thánh
Giuse hoặc Đức Phu Quân là hợp lý, không có gì là thái quá,
chẳng qua là do “thói quen”, nghe chưa “lọt tai” và đọc lên còn
cảm thấy “trúc trắc”, bởi vì chúng ta đã quá quen với cách gọi
cũ. Mà thay đổi một “nếp nghĩ” hay một “thói quen” đã lâu hẳn là
không dễ chút nào vậy!</div>

Trở lại với Đức Thánh Giuse trong dịp Lễ Giáng Sinh. Đức Thánh
Giuse đã được Thiên Chúa tuyển chọn làm Dưỡng Phụ của Chúa Giêsu
trên trần gian. Thiên Chúa biết Chúa Giêsu cần một Dưỡng Phụ để
nuôi dưỡng và giáo dục Ngài về phương diện nhân tính. Kinh Thánh
cho chúng ta biết rằng Đức Thánh Giuse là “người công chính”.
Nghĩa là ngài là người tốt, chân thật, công bình, luôn hết lòng
vâng phục và yêu kính Thiên Chúa.</div>

Khi thấy Đức Maria mang thai, Đức Thánh Giuse cảm thấy bối rối,
không biết xử trí cách nào, nên ngài đã “không muốn tố giác và
định tâm bỏ đi cách kín đáo” (Mt 1:19). Hai người mới đính hôn
chứ chưa về chung sống với nhau, thế mà “Bà Xã tương lai” lại có
cái bụng vượt mặt thì “căng” thật. Gay go hết sức!</div>

Tuy nhiên, khi người-công-chính-Giuse đang toan tính như vậy thì
sứ thần của Chúa hiện đến báo mộng: “Này Anh Giuse, con cháu
Đavít, đừng ngại đón Chị Maria về làm vợ, vì người con Chị cưu
mang là do quyền năng Chúa Thánh Thần. Chị sẽ sinh con trai và
Anh phải đặt tên cho con trẻ là Giêsu, vì chính Người sẽ cứu dân
Người khỏi tội lỗi của họ” (Mt 1:20-21). Khi tỉnh giấc, Chàng
Giuse làm như sứ thần Chúa dạy và vui vẻ đón vợ về nhà. Đức
Thánh Giuse được Thiên Chúa trao trọng trách là làm chồng của
Đức Maria và làm Dưỡng Phụ của Con Trẻ Giêsu, đồng thời có bổn
phận bảo vệ hai Mẹ Con. Đức Thánh Giuse đã vâng lời và hoàn
thành nhiệm vụ.</div>

Phúc bất trùng lai, họa vô đơn chí. Cái khổ này tiếp nối cái khổ
kia. Hoàng đế ra lệnh kiểm tra dân số, mà lại là cuộc kiểm tra
đầu tiên, thế là Chồng lại phải khăn gói quả mướp lên đường đưa
Vợ về quê để kê khai. Đường sá xa xôi, phương tiện chỉ có con
lừa. Chồng cho Vợ ngồi trên lưng lừa, còn mình đành lội bộ mà
dắt lừa đi. Đêm xuống, Vợ Chồng son tìm chỗ trọ thì chỗ nào cũng

lăng xăng cũng vui, quên cả mệt nhọc. Mấy con vật nằm nhai cỏ
cũng thấy vui mắt. Nhìn những ánh sao lấp lánh trên nền trời và
ngắm tuyết rơi cũng hay hay. Tạ ơn Chúa. Mọi sự cũng qua!</div>

Nhưng rồi rắc rối xảy ra nữa. Sau khi Con Trẻ Giêsu sinh ra tại
Belem, thiên thần lại hiện ra với Đức Thánh Giuse và nói rằng
Con Trẻ đang gặp nguy hiểm, phải đi trốn sang Ai Cập (x. Mt
2:13-14). Đức Thánh Giuse lại vâng lời sứ thần, đưa Vợ Con sang
Ai Cập để trốn “lệnh truy nã” của vua Hêrôđê. Sau nhiều năm lẩn
trốn, Thánh Gia mới có thể bình an lên đường trở về quê quán
Nadarét.</div>
