<font size="3">Con cái chăm sóc cha mẹ khi già yếu là bổn phận mà
cũng là truyền thống tốt đẹp của dân ta. Tuy vậy ta cũng thường nghe

Tuổi bắt đầu lú lẫn hay thay tính đổi nết thì tùy người. Có khi chưa
tới sáu mươi, có khi ngoài bảy mươi mới phát hiện. Cũng có người
sống tới ngoài chín mươi mà không thay đổi là bao. Những chứng lú
(dementia) như vậy, ngày trước thì cho là tiến trình tự nhiên của
tuổi già, coi như là “hết thuốc chữa”. Nhưng càng ngày càng thấy là
có nhiều căn do bệnh tật sinh lú lẫn, và trong nhiều trường hợp, có
thể, nếu không chữa được bệnh thì ít ra cũng làm cho bệnh chậm lại.</font></span></div>

không biết là tháng mấy. Nhưng người bị bệnh thì không nhớ luôn cả
năm nay là năm 1999, ở trong nhà mình mà không biết mình đang ở đâu.
Người bình thường, có khi gặp bạn cũ, người ta nhận ra mình, mà mình
không thể nào nhớ ra bạn được. Người bệnh lú thì nặng hơn nhiều. Ôm
chầm lấy một người bà con xa rồi hỏi:<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><i>“Ông
có phải bố tôi không?”</i>, hay là nhìn chăm chăm vào mặt bà vợ mà

<font size="3">Tuy rằng chứng lú lẫn thực sự thì không chữa được,
nhưng cái lợi của việc đi khám bệnh là tìm ra những bệnh khác trong
người, sinh lú lẫn, mà những bệnh khác này thì lại trị được. Những
bệnh có thể sinh một số tình trạng giống như lú lẫn, thí dụ như:
bệnh bướu cổ thyroid, bệnh nhiễm trùng, chất điện giải xáo trộn,
thiếu sinh tố, bị thuốc làm độc, hay là bệnh phiền muộn. Thường thì
Bác sĩ sẽ hỏi về các chứng của người bệnh, thuốc men đang dùng, hỏi
về gia đình giòng họ, khám tổng quát, chú ý nhiều đến cao máu, và
tiểu đường. Sau đó sẽ thử máu và có thể chụp hình cắt lớp (CT) hay
là cộng hưởng từ (MRI) để loại trừ trường hợp bướu trong óc. Nếu
không phải là những bệnh hay là nguyên do nào sinh lú lẫn trong nhất
thời, thì bấy giờ mới coi là bị bệnh lú lẫn thực sự.</font></span></div>

<font size="3">Phần lớn người già bị bệnh lú lẫn là do bệnh
Alzheimer. Có một ít trường hợp Alzheimer có di truyền trong gia
đình, nhưng phần đông thì không. Nguyên do tại sao bị Alzheimer, thì
cũng chưa biết rõ. Mổ tử thi thì thấy có thoái hóa não, và xét
nghiệm kính hiển vi thì thấy có hai thứ mô đặc biệt trong óc, một ở
bên trong sợi dây thần kinh, một ở bên ngoài. Tuy vậy cũng đã có
trường hợp người minh mẫn bình thường mà cũng có hai thứ đó.<br>
Nguyên nhân thứ nhì, là do bị tai biến mạch máu não (stroke, trúng
gió) do cao máu, sinh nhiều đốm nhỏ của óc bị hư, gọi là
multi-infarct dementia (infarct là chỉ cái đốm não bị hư)<br>
Người đánh “bốc”, bị đập mạnh vào đầu nhiều, cũng có thể bị bệnh lú.<br>
Bệnh AIDS cũng làm hư óc, và sinh lú được.<br>
Hồi gần đây, báo chí có nói tới bệnh “bò điên” ở bên Anh. Có một
bệnh tương tự như vậy, tên là bệnh Creutzfeld-Jacobs là một bệnh
nhiễm trùng óc, cũng sinh lú lẫn trước khi chết.</font></span></div>

trong tính tình, trong cách sinh hoạt, cho tới khi Bác sĩ định bệnh
là bị Alzheimer, hay lú, thì độ một hai năm. Khoảng thời gian chừng
ba, bốn năm sau đó thì người nhà còn săn sóc được. Đến khi nặng quá,
con cháu không cưu mang nổi phải đưa vào nhà dưỡng lão, thì thường
kéo dài thêm được vài năm nữa. Thời gian hoàng hôn của cuộc đời này,
người bệnh đáng được săn sóc chu đáo với tất cả tình thương, tuy là
săn sóc người bị bệnh lú là cả một nhiệm vụ khó khăn và nặng nề.</font></span></div>
